Help Bring Free Clothing Directly Into the Community

Join United Way of Marathon County’s Mobile Community Closet and help bring free clothing directly to individuals and families across Marathon County.

The Mobile Community Closet travels throughout the community to increase access to essential clothing while helping ease household expenses and support financial stability. Volunteers play an important role in creating a welcoming, respectful, and dignified shopping experience for every guest.

Unloading the Mobile Closet truck and setting up the shopping space

Greeting guests and assisting with registration or check-out

Helping individuals and families find clothing that meets their needs

Restocking and organizing clothing throughout the event

Packing up and reloading the truck at the end of the event

This is a hands-on volunteer opportunity where you can immediately see the impact of your time and effort.

No special experience is needed. Program staff are always onsite to provide guidance and support. This opportunity is a great fit for volunteers who enjoy staying active, working as part of a team, and connecting with others in a meaningful way.

United Way’s Hunger Coalition is looking for volunteers interested in supporting Our Garden throughout the growing season.

Our Garden is a welcoming community space where people can gather, learn, and access fresh food for free during the growing season. The project helps increase access to locally grown fresh produce throughout Marathon County. Produce harvested from the garden is shared with volunteers and local food pantries.

By signing up, you will be added to a volunteer contact list and notified when garden workdays, planting dates, harvest opportunities, and other volunteer needs are scheduled.

No gardening experience? No problem! We welcome anyone who enjoys being outdoors, getting their hands dirty, and helping create something meaningful for the community.

By volunteering with Our Garden, you are helping create a space where neighbors can gather, learn about gardening, and access locally grown produce at no cost.

The Hospital ER Victim Advocate volunteer role is a gratifying role! This role alleviates staff from going after hours, allowing more time in the office to meet with clients.

Hospital ER Victim Advocates are vital to victims getting an exam after an assault. At the hospital, volunteer advocates provide support to the victim with empathy, compassion, and strength.

Shelter Advocates are crucial to assisting staff with answering the support line. Relieving staff from answering the support line and assisting residents allows them to meet with clients, go to court, take walk-ins, and more! In 2025, the support line took over 2600 calls. Some duties include answering the 24-hour support line, assisting residents living in the emergency shelter, and providing support to callers and residents.

Have you always wanted to be a 'candy striper'? Our patients need you! Help enhance their hospital stay by providing comfort items at the bedside. A variety of items are provided at no charge to patients like playing cards, puzzle books, blankets, etc. Your help will not only benefit our patients but the rewards you will receive are priceless!

We believe that it is every child's right to grow and live in a world which welcomes them exactly as it does everyone else.

Aspirus Rainbow's End Day Camp for children with special needs gives these children (ages 5-21) from throughout north central Wisconsin a weeklong summer camp experience that encourages creativity and enhances the self-confidence of these children. The camp gives them the opportunity to enjoy safe, creative, and fun activities in a beautiful Wisconsin outdoor setting. The camp activities are individualized for each camper based on their abilities, strengths, and potential.

The camp relies heavily on volunteers who work one-on-one with these children so that they can participate to the fullest degree in camp activities.

Volunteer in the Day Surgery waiting room. Help convey patient status to waiting family members. Act as liaison between doctors, staff members, and those waiting. Keep track of family member(s) and locate them when needed. Escort family members to conference rooms or education room to meet with doctor or view video. You can greatly help our patients by making handmade items. We continue to need *Pocket Prayer Shawls*, Prayer Shawls, Twiddle Muffs, and always stuffed animals (must be homemade or new with tags). Aspirus Wausau Hospital is looking for compassionate individuals to help brighten the day of patients and guests. The Aspirus Family House is a beautiful, modern, home-like facility that provides temporary housing for patients traveling for long-term outpatient specialty care, as well as families coming long distances to be near their loved one who's hospitalized. The house eases the financial burden associated with travel for our most vulnerable patients and families.

Help our guests by visiting with them in common areas, assisting staff with changing beds, cleaning, basic household duties, etc. to help keep the house looking fresh, organized, well-stocked and homelike.

Or, if cooking or baking are your forte, bring in homemade food for guests that you can make at home and deliver.

HIGH NEED

Holy Communion brings spiritual and emotional strength to cope with life and its many challenges. Hospitalized patients are in special need of receiving Christ's presence at these times.

You can help with this ministry by volunteering to distribute Holy Communion and pray with Catholic patients in the hospital. Orientation and training provided.

Required: You must be appointed by the Catholic Church as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. 

Our patients, guests, and staff need the comfort that sometimes only a dog can provide. Provide an adjunct therapy activity for patients who would like additional social or emotional stimulation. Visit with patients, guests, and staff who love seeing furry friends. Pets must be certified through an American Kennel Club accrediting agency.

HIGH NEED

Play a vital role in enhancing the emotional well-being of our patients by offering them companionship, conversation, and support. Assist with non-clinical requests like playing games/cards, helping with puzzles, reading to them, tidying their room, making phone calls, etc. Training provided.

Help your elderly and special needs community neighbors remain in their homes by installing Aspirus Lifeline equipment in subscriber residences. Volunteers go into homes throughout Marathon County to install and show the subscriber how to use their personal help button and Lifeline unit. They also provide replacement batteries for personal help buttons and units in subscriber homes, as well as general troubleshooting. Must possess a valid WI driver's license. Training provided. Mileage reimbursement.

Help your elderly and special needs community neighbors remain in their homes. Volunteers go into the homes of Aspirus Lifeline subscribers throughout Marathon County to change out batteries and personal help buttons. Must have a valid driver's license. Training provided. Mileage reimbursement.

As an EZ Rider driver, you'll operate a golf cart-style vehicle specially designed to help our patients and visitors navigate the hospital. Whether it's assisting someone who needs a little extra help or simply brightening their day, you'll make a big difference in their experience. Volunteers assist cancer patients with access to and education on wigs, turbans, and scarves, helping them feel confident and cared for during their health journey. We have an ongoing need for volunteers to help with the Good News Project's e-CYCLING program. Volunteers are needed every Friday between the hours of 9-4 to help keep electronic waste out of our landfills. Our scheduling is very flexible; you can choose to volunteer every Friday or once or twice a month, full days, half days, or just a couple of hours. 

Key Activities:

1.     Customer Service: Greet customers, fill out customer form, advocate for Good News Project

2.     Lifter/Sorter: Unload cars to wagons, weigh electronics, sort electronics into shipping containers

What to wear: Dress for the weather; we suggest layers. Wear comfortable closed-toed shoes. Electronics can be dirty so please plan accordingly.

Physical requirements:

·       Ability to stand for the duration of your shift.

·       As a lifter/sorter you would be required to lift 50lbs.

Join us for an exciting Milwaukee Brewers game alongside Club kids! As a volunteer, you will accompany youth to the game, help supervise and engage with kids throughout the outing, assist with group coordination and transitions, and serve as an enthusiastic, positive presence in the stands.

We're looking for energetic, caring adults who enjoy spending time with young people and want to make a difference in their community. You don't need to be a baseball expert — just someone who shows up with a smile and a servant heart.

For many of our kids, this may be their first-ever professional baseball game. Your presence helps make that moment possible and memorable. Volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club is a chance to be a trusted mentor, create lasting memories, and invest directly in the lives of youth in your community.

Tutoring volunteers play an integral role within GiGi’s Playhouse by facilitating educational and therapeutic skill development activities and connecting with families. All training is provided and you will have access to a vast library of resources to help you teach participants skills.

The Literacy and Math programs are both individualized to each participants unique interests, skill levels, and needs. Literacy is designed to improve participants language (both written and spoken). Math programming is built to develop skills from basic number, shape, and color identification to multiplication and division.

These programs serve ages 3 to adulthood, and volunteers must be 16 years old or greater.

Shelter Support Team volunteers support the day-to-day activities within a shelter, which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas. Free online training will be provided. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4 to 12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts, is required. More extreme weather means more volunteers are needed. Be part of our work to help save millions of lives each year by volunteering as a blood drive volunteer and welcoming donors who give the gift of life. Blood donor ambassadors welcome donors to blood drives and provide friendly support before and after they give. This can include helping donors to register, answering their questions and assisting them at the refreshments table..

Training is free, but the support you provide is priceless. Make a difference by joining the American Red Cross to collect lifesaving blood to those in need. Volunteer drivers are needed to help with transportation to medical appointments and grocery shopping—support that is truly invaluable. We are especially looking for volunteers who live in outlying areas such as Marathon, Mosinee, Athens, Birnamwood, Stratford, and Hatley.

There is a growing need for rides among older adults living throughout Marathon County, especially outside of Wausau.

What You'll Do:
Help pack fresh, organic produce into ~200 boxes that will be distributed to local agencies throughout Marathon County. Each week during the growing season, United Way’s Hunger Coalition purchases produce from Red Door Family Farm and Cattail Organics in Athens, WI meaning dollars stay local and your efforts make it easier to get this healthy food into the hands of those who need it most.

Why It Matters:
When people are experiencing financial insecurity, nutritious and locally-sourced produce may seem like a luxury. We believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy foods, and providing it for free means that people can use their hard-earned dollars on other expenses. These small steps add up on someone's path to financial stability.

McLit volunteers help adults build the skills that open doors — to jobs, independence, confidence, and connection

As a tutor, you’ll work one‑on‑one with adult learners in a welcoming, walk‑in learning center where every person is met with dignity and encouragement.

This role is intentionally flexible. You bring your strengths, and we’ll help you find the best match.

McLit’s walk‑in learning center is a busy, welcoming space where adults come for tutoring, support, and encouragement.

As an Admin Support Volunteer, you help keep the heart of our organization running smoothly — making it possible for staff and tutors to spend more time directly supporting learners.

This is a great role for someone who enjoys organizing, greeting people, and creating a warm, calm environment where everyone feels welcome.

What You Can Help With:

You can choose the tasks that fit your strengths and comfort level:

•  Greeting learners and helping them sign in

•  Answering basic questions or directing visitors to staff

•  Light office tasks (copying, filing, organizing materials)

•  Preparing tutoring supplies or learning packets

•  Updating resource boards or restocking forms

•  Assisting with data entry or simple computer tasks

•  Helping keep the learning center tidy and inviting

•  Supporting special projects or events as needed

You don’t need prior office experience — just a friendly presence and a willingness to help.

We are looking for homemade Christmas cards to send to our care-receivers in December.

Join us to become a trishaw pilot!  We provide free rides to seniors and those in our community that are unable to bicycle for themselves. Drive one of our electric assist trishaws to give passengers a meaningful opportunity to stay engaged in the community, enjoy the simple pleasure of a bike ride and experience the joy of being outdoors in a safe, social setting.  Not sure how to drive an electric assist trishaw?  No worries, we will train you!

Faith in Action partners with The Neighbors Place to deliver food pantry items to seniors in Marathon County who are unable to leave their homes easily. Each care receiver is provided with two bags of groceries, delivered twice a month on Wednesday mornings.

We are currently seeking substitute drivers to step in when regular volunteers are unavailable due to illness or vacation. Routes typically take about 1.5 hours and include 4–8 deliveries, organized by location in Wausau, Rothschild, Schofield, or Weston.

Volunteers must be available to pick up pre-packed grocery bags from The Neighbors Place between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Permanent routes may become available in the future.

Legislative Action Volunteers can make a huge impact when it comes to laws relating to victims - whether that is about funding, domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, gun laws, transgender laws, and more!

You would be contacting legislators on behalf of yourself, but it is volunteer time. Whether that is calling, emailing, or tweeting, we are hoping to make a positive impact in the lives of the victims we serve. 

This role would be a volunteer from home role. A staff person will send out info as we get it for you to reach out to legislators. This is a role you can do from home on your own time!

NAMI Northwoods is looking for a volunteer to help recruit, onboard, and stay connected with the facilitators who lead our support groups and classes.

This role focuses on people and follow-through by making sure interested volunteers are welcomed, guided through next steps, and supported as they move into facilitator roles.

Responsibilities include responding to inquiries, helping coordinate onboarding conversations, tracking where volunteers are in the process, and assisting with scheduling and reminders for facilitator trainings.

You will also help maintain light, ongoing communication with facilitators to keep them engaged and supported.

This is a behind-the-scenes role that plays a critical part in keeping programs running. It is a great fit for someone who is organized, responsive, and enjoys connecting with people.

The time commitment is approximately 2 to 3 hours per week, with flexible scheduling. Most work can be done remotely.

NAMI Northwoods offers peer support groups for adults living with mental health conditions. These groups provide a space where individuals can share openly, connect with others who understand, and feel less alone.

We are looking for volunteer facilitators to help lead these groups.

Our groups follow the NAMI Wisconsin Peer Support Group Model, which is structured to ensure a safe, respectful, and confidential environment. Groups are peer-led, meaning they are guided by individuals with lived experience of mental health who understand the journey of recovery.

Facilitators are not therapists or problem-solvers. Your role is to guide conversation, uphold group guidelines, and help create a balanced space where everyone has the opportunity to be heard.

You will follow a structured format that supports healthy discussion, reinforces boundaries, and encourages shared responsibility within the group. Training is provided, and you will co-facilitate with a partner.

This role requires strong listening skills, boundaries, and the ability to sit with people in real moments without trying to fix everything.

If you have lived experience with mental health and want to use it to support others, this is a meaningful way to give back.

Lived experience with a mental health condition is required.
