Who We Are

About the Marathon County Historical Society
The Marathon County Historical Society connects people with the stories, places, and materials that shape the history of Marathon County. Through historic homes, exhibits, educational programs, events, archives, and community partnerships, we help preserve local history and make it accessible to the public.
Volunteers are an important part of this work. Whether welcoming visitors, assisting with programs, supporting special events, or lending a hand behind the scenes, volunteers help create meaningful experiences for the community.
Our work is centered across two historic properties in Wausau. The Yawkey House Museum offers guided tours that explore the lives, architecture, and local impact connected to one of Wausau’s most recognized historic homes. Across the street, the Woodson History Center features exhibit spaces, administrative offices, the Research Library, and archives, which include photographs, newspapers, yearbooks, city directories, business records, family histories, and other materials connected to Marathon County’s past.
Throughout the year, the Historical Society offers a variety of public programs and events, including an annual series of History Speaks presentations, seasonal events, family programs, cemetery tours, and educational experiences. We also coordinate the Little Red Schoolhouse program, wh
ich welcomes fourth-grade students from across the county for an immersive day of learning about local history. Schoolhouse seasons are from September-October and April-May.
There are many ways to get involved, and volunteers are encouraged to find opportunities that match their interests, skills, and availability. If you don’t see an opportunity in what you are looking for, don’t hesitate to reach out! Whether you are interested in visitor engagement, education, events, or general support, your time helps strengthen the connection between Marathon County’s history and the people who experience it today.
As a thank-you, volunteers receive an honorary membership to the Marathon County Historical Society, which includes our newsletter, special event invitations, and an invitation to our annual member and volunteer appreciation reception.
What We Do
Our mission is to collect, preserve, and exhibit materials related to the history of Marathon County; and to use these materials to help people learn about North Central Wisconsin, discover their roots, and explore their own historical connections. The Marathon County Historical Society provides opportunities for people to “connect” with the past and discover something about their own history and where they live. We help people learn about their own connection with the community as well as its historic roots, and how the past played a role in who they are today. We accomplish this through education, preservation, research, experiences, and entertainment.
