Bring Local History to Life for 4th Grade Students
Opportunity Overview
Partnered with the Marathon County Parks Department, the Marathon County Historical Society’s Little Red Schoolhouse gives 4th grade students a chance to experience a day in a 1900s one‑room schoolhouse. Volunteers help lead or support historic lessons using McGuffey Readers, spelling bees, recitation, and penmanship, all while dressed in period costume to create an immersive experience.
Volunteers work alongside current teachers and may step into teaching roles as openings arise. Spring and Fall sessions are available, with flexible scheduling.
What You’ll Do
- Support classroom activities alongside current teachers
- Lead or assist with 1900s lessons using McGuffey Readers, spelling bees, recitation, and penmanship
- Dress in period costume to enhance the historic experience
- Engage with students and guide them through their “day in 1900”
- Support program flow during Spring and Fall sessions

Time Commitment
