Marathon County Literacy Council, Inc. dba. McLit

Who We Are

McLit: Marathon County Literacy Council strengthens our community by helping adults build the literacy skills they need to thrive.

We believe everyone deserves the confidence that comes from understanding, communicating, and navigating daily life — and we meet learners exactly where they are with patience, dignity, and encouragement.

For more than 30 years, McLit has provided free, walk‑in tutoring and life‑skills support to adults across Central Wisconsin.

Our volunteer tutors help learners improve reading, writing, math, computer skills, English language skills, and preparation for the GED. We also support individuals working toward employment, financial stability, housing, and everyday tasks like filling out forms or preparing for a driver’s test.

Our work extends beyond the classroom.

Through family literacy programs, children’s tutoring, and community partnerships, we help strengthen entire households and create pathways for long‑term success.

At McLit, learning is personal, flexible, and built on trust. Every day, we see how literacy opens doors — to jobs, to independence, and to a stronger, more connected community.

What We Do

McLit helps adults build the literacy and life‑skills they need to navigate daily life with confidence.

All services are free, walk‑in friendly, and supported by trained volunteer tutors who meet learners with patience, respect, and encouragement.

From our welcoming downtown Wausau location — 515 N. 3rd Street, next to Janke Bookstore — we provide one‑on‑one and small‑group support in the skills that matter most for independence, employment, and community connection.

Our Mission:  Improving the quality of life through literacy. How We Support Learners

Volunteers help adults strengthen skills that open doors to opportunity, including:

  • Reading, writing, and math
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Citizenship preparation
  • HSED/GED readiness
  • Resume writing and job searching
  • Navigating online applications
  • Researching housing and community resources

Whether someone is preparing for a new job, studying for a driver’s test, learning English, or simply wanting to feel more confident in everyday tasks, McLit provides a safe, welcoming place to learn at their own pace.

Our Approach

  • Free services for all adults
