George W. Mead Wildlife Area

Who We Are

The George W. Mead Wildlife Area is...

A welcoming nature hub where volunteers help visitors explore, learn, and feel at home in the outdoors

A team that equips people with free field bags, binoculars, hiking poles, stools, snowshoes, and an All‑Terrain Wheelchair so everyone can enjoy the land.

A place that’s always open — the wildlife area is available 24/7, giving volunteers endless ways to support visitors and nature lovers.

A community connector hosting free, family‑friendly events like the Decoy Expo, Kite Festival, Wildlife Art Gallery, and Summer Fun at the Mead.

An education partner serving 30+ school groups and collaborating with The Landing, YMCA, Marathon County Public Library, ODC, Boys & Girls Club, WAEO, homeschool groups, and more.

A volunteer‑powered education team where staff and volunteers plan, prepare, and deliver hands on environmental programing.

What We Do

The George W. Mead Wildlife Area...

Cares for 33,000 acres of wetlands, forests, and grasslands—habitats volunteers help protect and interpret for visitors.

Supports incredible biodiversity with 273 bird species, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects that volunteers help people discover.

Creates meaningful outdoor experiences through 80+ miles of roads and dikes and three easy walking trails near the Center.

Offers moments of wonder where volunteers help visitors notice something new every time they explore.

Serves our region — connecting people across Wood, Portage, and Marathon Counties to nature and each other.

Grows environmental understanding by helping the public appreciate, support, and enjoy wildlife
