Support Beneficiaries, Spot Errors, and Help Prevent Health Care Fraud

Opportunity Overview

As a Complex Interactions Specialist, you become a trusted expert in recognizing and responding to health care fraud, which is one of the fastest‑growing threats facing older adults today. You’ll learn how to spot the latest fraud methods, understand how scammers operate, and gain the confidence to guide beneficiaries through confusing or stressful situations with clarity and care.

Many volunteers choose this role because they or someone they love has been affected by fraud. This opportunity lets you stand on the other side by helping others avoid the harm, fear, and financial loss that you or your loved ones may have experienced.

Health care fraud is a major issue nationwide:

  • An estimated $60 billion is lost to Medicare fraud each year.
  • Nearly 1 in 10 adults over 65 reports being targeted by health‑related scams annually.

Your voice can help stop it.

This is a fully virtual volunteer role, with all interactions handled by phone through the SMP Helpline. You’ll have meaningful, in‑depth conversations with beneficiaries, caregivers, and family members who reach out with concerns.  You help them feel heard, supported, and guided.

You may act on behalf of a beneficiary to correct an error or refer suspected fraud to the proper authorities. Many interactions involve reviewing personal information such as billing statements or other related financial and health documents, always with care and confidentiality.

What You’ll Do

  • Respond to helpline calls routed to your SMP‑provided cellphone
  • Review documents such as billing statements when needed
  • Help identify errors and support beneficiaries in correcting them
  • Refer suspected fraud to appropriate authorities
